Does a civil union provide any spousal support?

In Oklahoma, a civil union does not provide any spousal support. Civil unions are a type of legally recognized relationship, but they do not provide the same protections as marriage. Since Oklahoma does not recognize same-sex marriage, it does not recognize same-sex civil unions either. As such, individuals in a civil union in Oklahoma do not have access to the same benefits as married couples, such as spousal support. When a married couple gets divorced, the court may order the higher-earning spouse to pay spousal support to the lower-earning spouse. This is not the case for civil unions. A court cannot order spousal support to be paid in a civil union, as the relationship is not recognized by the state. The same is true for property division and other court proceedings. It is important to note that since civil unions are not recognized by Oklahoma, individuals in civil unions who move to another state may not have protections there, either. Individuals in civil unions should understand the rights that they have -- or lack -- in Oklahoma and be aware of how those rights may or may not be enforced in another state.
