Are there any civil union laws in the United States?

Yes, there are civil union laws in the United States. A civil union is a legal relationship between two adults of the same or opposite sex. These unions grant the couple certain legal rights and benefits, but they are not considered marriages. Currently, civil union laws exist in eight states - California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Additionally, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico both recognize civil unions. Oklahoma does not currently have civil union laws in place, but there have been attempts to pass a law. In the spring of 2015, there was a push to pass a law allowing civil unions in the state, but unfortunately it was not successful. However, individuals in Oklahoma may still be able to benefit from the civil union laws of other states. If one partner lives in a state that does recognize civil unions and the other partner lives in Oklahoma, the union may be recognized and the couple may be eligible for certain benefits and rights. Additionally, if the couple travels to a state with civil unions, those laws may apply to them.
