Is a civil union recognized for student loan benefits?

No. To date, Oklahoma does not recognize civil unions in any form, and as such, civil unions are not recognized for student loan benefits. Civil union laws in Oklahoma are very limited, and only provide limited rights to couples, such as the ability to visit each other in the hospital and make medical decisions on behalf of one another. The state does not recognize any type of same-sex unions, including civil unions. Civil union laws exist in only a few states, and Oklahoma is not one of them. Because Oklahoma does not recognize civil unions, couples in civil unions are not eligible to receive the same protections and benefits afforded to married couples, such as the ability to apply together for student loans. In Oklahoma, the only way to obtain student loan benefits is to be married or in a legally recognized relationship. Even if a student in a civil union is living with their partner, they are not eligible for student loan benefits unless they are married. Student loan benefits are not available to unmarried partners of any kind.
