Are civil unions recognized on passport applications?
In North Carolina, civil unions are not recognized on passport applications. This is due to the fact that North Carolina does not recognize civil unions. Civil unions are legally recognized partnerships between two people of the same sex, similar to a marriage. These unions are not accepted as a marriage in North Carolina. Because of this, the state does not recognize the rights of the couple to the same benefits the state would give to a married couple. Thus, passport applications do not accept civil unions as a valid form of partnership and only recognize marriage. If a couple in a civil union wants to apply for a passport, they must be legally married in the eyes of North Carolina in order to do so. The couple must have a marriage license that is recognized by the state, as this is the only document that is accepted on the application. Civil unions are emotional and legal commitments that are accepted in certain states such as Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, and Delaware. However, in North Carolina, civil unions are not recognized. Thus, couples in civil unions cannot use this form of partnership on a passport application.
