Can a civil union be converted into a domestic partnership?

In North Carolina, civil unions cannot be converted into domestic partnerships, as the two are not currently recognized in the state. Civil unions were only recognized in North Carolina briefly due to a law that was in effect between October 1, 2010 and June 30, 2013. During this period, couples could enter into civil unions, but the law was repealed in 2013. In North Carolina, a domestic partnership is defined as a “close and committed personal relationship between two individuals of the same sex who are living together in an interdependent relationship that involves mutual support of a permanent nature.” While this type of relationship is not currently recognized in North Carolina, there have been a number of bills introduced in the legislature which would provide for legal recognition of domestic partnerships. In short, civil unions in North Carolina cannot be converted into domestic partnerships, as the latter is not currently recognized in the state. However, there are efforts being made to pass legislation that would provide for legal recognition of same-sex relationships, which could potentially lead to the establishment of domestic partnerships in North Carolina.
