Are there any limitations on the length of a civil union?
When it comes to civil unions in North Carolina, there are certain limitations that must be observed in regards to their length. The North Carolina General Statute Chapter 51 allows for civil unions to last no more than three years. This is the legal amount of time to remain in a civil union. After that time, a couple must either renew the civil union or dissolve the union altogether. In addition to the time limitations, couples must also meet certain requirements in order to enter into a valid civil union. Couples cannot be in a current marriage to someone else or be related to one another. Both people must enter into a civil union of their own free will and be of the same gender and of legal age. In North Carolina, civil unions are not considered legal marriages, however, they still provide the same legal rights and obligations that a marriage would. This includes the rights to make health decisions for a partner in the event of incapacitation, the ability to make funeral arrangements, the rights to inheritance and other benefits. It is important to note that civil unions are not recognized in all states. Furthermore, couples in a civil union are not allowed to receive any federal benefits that are made available to married couples.
