Yes, civil unions are recognized in the federal and state court systems of California. A civil union is a legal recognition of a relationship between two people that is similar to a marriage. These unions provide couples with some of the same rights and benefits that married couples have. In the state of California, civil unions are recognized in the court system in regards to family law. This means any couple legally recognized in a civil union can apply to the court system when filing for separation, dissolution or change of relationship status. The couple will also be covered by any relevant state laws concerning custody, visitation, child support, spousal support and property division. This also applies in the event of death. On the federal level, civil unions are not recognized by the United States Supreme Court. This means that laws concerning taxes, social security benefits, immigration, and other federal issues do not apply to civil unions. However, some federal laws may still apply in limited circumstances. All in all, civil unions are legally recognized on the state level in California and are subject to the same laws as married couples in regards to family law and dissolution of the civil union. However, civil unions are not recognized on the federal level and do not carry the same rights and benefits as a marriage.
