Are there any requirements for entering into a civil union?
To enter into a civil union in the state of Texas, both parties must meet certain requirements. Both parties must be legally aged, which is 18 years old or older. Neither party can already be married, or already be in another civil union or other legally recognized union. If either party has been married before, they must provide proof that the marriage has been terminated, such as a divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate. Both parties must not be related to each other by blood, marriage, adoption, or guardianship. Both parties must appear at the county clerk’s office together in person and swear or affirm under oath that all of the information that they are providing is true and correct. Proof of identification and residency, such as a valid driver’s license or state issued identification card, must be provided. Depending on the county in which the civil union is being entered into, additional documentation may be required. A criminal background check may be conducted, and if either party has been convicted of a felony, the civil union will not be issued. A civil union in the state of Texas requires both parties to meet the eligibility requirements outlined above. Additionally, both parties must enter into a civil union of their own free will. For the union to be legally binding, all paperwork must be filled out and submitted correctly.
