What is an answer?
An answer in civil procedure in Arizona is a pleading filed by a defendant in response to a plaintiff’s complaint. It is an opportunity for the defendant to set forth the factual and legal basis for their defense to the claims alleged in the complaint and is typically required before a lawsuit can proceed to trial. The answer will usually deny some or all of the plaintiff’s claims or admissions and any affirmative defenses the defendant may have under applicable legal principles. A defendant may also include a counterclaim in their answer, which is a legal action brought against the plaintiff by the defendant to recover damages for any wrongs committed. Depending on the jurisdiction, a defendant may also file a reply to the complaint or a motion to dismiss the plaintiff’s lawsuit outright.
