What is Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972?

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity that receives federal funds. This law applies to schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions, both in the public and private sectors. Title IX was designed to ensure equal educational opportunities for both men and women, as well as eliminate all forms of sexual or gender-based harassment or discrimination. The law states that any educational program or activity must treat men and women equally, and must provide equal access to educational services and activities, such as sports teams and clubs, admissions, and curriculum offerings. Title IX also forbids punishing anyone for reporting a violation of the law, or for participating in a Title IX investigation or proceeding. In Virginia, Title IX is enforced by the Office of Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Education. Title IX also requires schools to have procedures in place to quickly and effectively respond to complaints of discrimination and harassment. This includes promptly addressing and resolving complaints of sexual harassment, like sexual assault and rape, dating violence, and stalking. Schools are also required to provide students with information about the school’s policies and procedures to address such complaints. In Virginia, there are programs and initiatives such as “It’s On Us” and “Be A Voice” which are designed to provide education and awareness of Title IX and sexual misconduct.
