What is the obligation of schools to accommodate student religious expression?

In California, civil rights law outlines the obligation of schools to accommodate student religious expression. This obligation is to ensure all students have access to learning without discrimination and to have their religious beliefs respected. Schools must provide reasonable accommodations for religious activities and observances that occur during and/or outside of regular school hours. This includes, but is not limited to, prayer services, religious holidays and religious attire. Schools must also provide a reasonable space for religious expression, such as an area for prayers, and ensure that student-led religious activities and discussions are properly respected. In addition, schools are obligated to ensure that students are not discriminated against based on their religious beliefs or practices. Schools must also ensure that students are not required to participate in any activity which violates their religious beliefs. For example, students should not be required to participate in group prayer or be assessed on material which conflicts with their religious beliefs. In California, schools are expected to accommodate religious expression in order to promote the freedom of religion, provide access to education, and to ensure that students have a safe and respectful learning environment. By respecting the religious beliefs of each student and providing reasonable accommodations, schools can ensure that all religious faiths are respected and that each student is treated with fairness and respect.
