What remedies exist for race discrimination in schools?

In Oregon, race discrimination in schools is prohibited by law and there exist a variety of remedies for individuals who experience such discrimination. These remedies are set forth in a variety of federal and state laws, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Oregon Equality Act, and Oregon Administrative Rules. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that prohibits employers and government entities, such as schools, from discriminating on the basis of race. Under this law, people who experience racial discrimination can file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). If the EEOC determines that discrimination occurred, it can take action to help the complainant. This may include providing future relief, requiring the offender to pay monetary damages, and/or taking steps to ensure this type of discrimination does not happen again. The Oregon Equality Act is a state law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, and other characteristics. If a student believes that he or she has been discriminated against on the basis of race, he or she can file a complaint with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries. This complaint will be investigated, and if discrimination has occurred, the Bureau can take action against the offender. Finally, Oregon Administrative Rules provide specific remedies for schools that discriminate on the basis of race. These remedies include suspension or expulsion of the offender, revoking of financial aid or scholarships, revocation of diplomas, and/or canceling of contracts. In sum, Oregon has a variety of laws and regulations in place to ensure that all students are treated fairly and equitably. If a student believes that he or she has been discriminated against on the basis of race, there are a variety of remedies available in Oregon to protect their rights.
