What is cybercrime and how is it addressed by cybersecurity law?
Cybercrime is any crime that is committed using a computer or the internet. Common examples of cybercrime include identity theft, hacking, phishing, and copyright infringement. Cybersecurity law is a set of laws and regulations intended to protect computer systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks and exploitation. In California, cybersecurity law is largely codified in Title 1.6 of the California Penal Code. This section of the code defines various cybercrimes and outlines the penalties for committing them. For example, it outlines the penalties for hacking into a computer system without authorization, as well as penalties for selling or distributing malicious code and programs. It also outlines the penalties for identity theft, a crime which carries a felony penalty in California. In addition, California law provides special protections for those under the age of 18 when it comes to internet and computer-related crimes. In general, cybersecurity law is intended to protect both individuals and businesses from malicious attacks and data theft, while also providing harsh consequences for those who commit cybercrimes. Cybersecurity law can be a powerful deterrent to would-be attackers.
