What is a class-action lawsuit?

A class-action lawsuit is a type of legal action where a small group of people file a single lawsuit on behalf of a large group of people who have been affected by the same problem or issue. In the case of Dangerous Products Law in Utah, this type of lawsuit could be used when a large number of people have been injured or affected by the same dangerous product. It allows all the people affected by the same issue to come together in one lawsuit, instead of each person filing individual lawsuits. This allows the case to be heard quicker and more efficiently. In a class-action lawsuit, the court will recognize the group of people as a single "class," and any damages awarded to the group will be split among the members of the class. In addition, if the lawsuit is successful, the defendant is more likely to make sure the same issue does not happen again and that they provide some form of compensation to the affected group.
