What is the difference between data security, privacy and cyber security?
Data security, privacy and cyber security are terms that are often used interchangeably, but they have slightly different meanings. Data security is the protection of data from unauthorized access, use, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. It includes protecting data from malicious attacks, such as computer viruses, that can destroy or corrupt data. Privacy, on the other hand, is a matter of personal choice. It refers to how individuals want to control the disclosure and use of their personal data. Cyber security, sometimes called computer security, is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks. It also encompasses activities to protect systems and networks from damage caused by natural disasters and human mistakes. In Washington, data security is regulated by the Washington Data Security and Breach Notification Law. This law requires businesses to maintain reasonable security measures to protect data and take steps to notify consumers if their personal information is breached. Cyber security is addressed in the Washington Cyber Security Protection Act, which sets forth guidelines for government agencies and municipalities to protect electronic systems and data from cyber-attacks. There is also the Washington Privacy Act, which requires state agencies to limit the collection and use of personal information and create processes for individuals to access their data.
