What is the difference between GDPR and the US data protection laws?
Data security law is a set of regulations that are designed to protect people’s private data from being misused. In North Carolina, both GDPR and US data protection laws are applicable to businesses. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation from the European Union (EU). It applies to any business that handles the personal data of EU citizens, regardless of where in the world the business is located. GDPR requires businesses to protect personal data, notify customers about how their data will be used, seek consent to use data, and provide customers with the right to delete or modify their data. US data protection laws vary from state to state. In North Carolina, the data protection laws are meant to protect personal data collected by businesses. These laws require businesses to provide users with a clear notice about how their data will be used, inform users about the rights they have to access and delete their data, and take steps to protect user data from being hacked or misused. The main difference between GDPR and US data protection laws is that GDPR applies to all businesses that handle data of EU citizens, while US data protection laws are state-based and need to be followed by businesses located in the US. Also, GDPR has more stringent requirements for data protection, and businesses need to adhere to these requirements to be compliant. Lastly, GDPR allows EU citizens to have a right to access, delete, and modify their data, which isn’t always available in the US.
