How is a breathalyzer test administered?
A breathalyzer test is administered to measure a person’s Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) to determine if they are legally intoxicated. In Wisconsin, a breathalyzer test is required for individuals who have been arrested for drunk driving. The test is administered by police officers in the field, after the person has been arrested. In order to administer a breathalyzer test, a police officer will request the person to blow into a breathalyzer machine. The person will have to blow continuously for around 6-9 seconds and the machine will then measure the BAC level. The goal is for the person to provide two valid breath test results that are less than a .08 BAC level. The breathalyzer results are then sent to the Wisconsin government’s breath test lab in Madison for additional testing and verification. The lab reviews the results and verifies the breath test results. The breathalyzer results must be brought before a judge in court to be used in any criminal trial. Breathalyzer tests are used to provide evidence of the person’s BAC level during their time of arrest. In Wisconsin, the legal limit for a BAC level is .08 or higher. If the person’s BAC level is .08 or higher, they are considered to be legally intoxicated, and could face criminal penalties.
