How much insurance should a person carry in the event of a drunk driving accident?

In the state of California, a person should carry a minimum of $15,000 in bodily injury liability insurance per person and $30,000 in total bodily injury liability insurance per accident. In addition, a person should carry a minimum of $5,000 in property damage liability insurance per accident. These minimums are known as the 15/30/5 coverage. In the event of a drunk driving accident, drivers should carry higher coverage limits than the minimums stated above. On top of the 15/30/5 coverage, drivers should consider other types of coverage, such as uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, personal injury protection, and collision insurance. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage can provide coverage if the driver of the other vehicle is found to be at fault but does not have adequate insurance coverage. Personal injury protection can provide coverage if the driver or the passenger in the driver’s own vehicle is injured in the accident. Collision insurance provides coverage for damage to the driver’s own vehicle in the event of an accident, regardless of who is found to be at fault. For optimal protection, it is recommended that drivers carry the highest coverage limits available to them. Higher coverage limits will provide additional protection in case they are found to be at fault and must pay more than the minimum coverage limits can provide. This is especially important in the event of a drunk driving accident, as the penalties for being found at fault are much more severe.
