What is an ignition interlock device and how does it work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breathalyzer machine that is installed in a vehicle and must be used before the engine can be started. It is designed to help deter people from driving while intoxicated. If the device detects a certain amount of alcohol on the driver’s breath, the engine will not start. To start the vehicle, the driver must blow into a tube attached to the device and the IID will measure the amount of alcohol in the driver’s breath. If the device detects a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of over 0.08, which is the legal limit, the vehicle will not start. Some IIDs may require additional tests at regular intervals while the vehicle is running, to ensure that the driver’s BAC remains below the legal limit before restarting the car. In California, all convicted drunk drivers must install an IID in their vehicle and use it for a certain amount of time. In some cases, the length of time may be determined by the severity of the offense. This is done to help ensure that those who have been convicted of drunk driving do not put other drivers in danger by driving while intoxicated. The use of an IID is also required for drivers who have been found to be in violation of California’s Zero Tolerance Law, which prohibits drivers under 21 years of age from operating a vehicle with any detectable amount of alcohol in their system.
