What are the possible criminal penalties for a DUI conviction?

In Arizona, a conviction for a DUI or Driving Under the Influence can lead to a variety of criminal penalties, depending on the severity of the offense and any prior convictions. The potential penalties range from mandatory alcohol education classes and fines to prison sentences. A first-time DUI misdemeanor charge can carry up to 6 months in prison (maximum of 10 days in jail if the blood alcohol content is over .15) and fines of up to $1,250. A second-offense DUI within 84 months of the first can lead to mandatory jail time, from 90 days to 1 year, as well as fines ranging from $3,000 to $5,000. Any subsequent DUI within 84 months of a previous conviction will result in up to 3 years in prison and fines of $2,500 to $5,000. In addition to criminal penalties, a DUI conviction can also result in a 90-day license suspension and the requirement to install an ignition interlock device on the offender’s car. These devices require the driver to take a breath test before the car will start. Other civil penalties such as increased auto insurance premiums may also apply. Unfortunately, the punishments for a DUI are severe, and they can have a profound impact on a person’s life. It is important that all drivers act responsibly and abide by traffic laws to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
