How long can a debt collector attempt to collect a debt?

In Tennessee, debt collectors have a certain length of time to collect a debt that is based on the type of debt. Generally, all debt collectors in Tennessee are limited to a time period of six (6) years that they can attempt to collect the debt. This is known as the statute of limitations and applies to any type of debt. If the debt is related to a court judgment or court order, then the time period for the debt collection is extended and the debt collector can attempt to collect the debt for up to ten (10) years. Also, it is important to note that debt collectors may not attempt to collect on debts that are older than the statute of limitations established by the state. If they do attempt to collect on debts that are older than the statute of limitations, it is considered illegal and the debtors have the right to sue them. Additionally, it is important to be aware that the statute of limitations may be subject to certain exceptions. For instance, if the debt is due to income tax or student loan debt, then the statute of limitations may be extended. It is best to consult with a lawyer if you think you may be dealing with an extended statute of limitations for a particular debt. Overall, debt collectors in Tennessee are generally limited to a time period of six (6) years to attempt to collect a debt. However, depending on the nature of the debt, the period of time that the debt collector can attempt to collect may be extended.
