Can a debt collector contact me at any time of day?

In North Carolina, debt collectors must generally adhere to certain regulations about when and how they may contact you. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, debt collectors may not contact you before 8:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m., unless you agree to do so. Additionally, they may not contact you on Sundays or public holidays. Debt collectors may also not contact you at your place of work if it is made known to them that your employer does not allow it. However, if you have given your work telephone number to a debt collector, they can contact you at that number. Debt collectors may also contact you through mail, telephone, fax, or electronic means. If you are being contacted by mail, the debt collector may not communicate with you directly, as they must send all of their notices to your last known address. Finally, if you think the debt collector is harassing you or violating your rights, it is important to know that you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, which is in charge of enforcing laws relating to debt collection. Ultimately, debt collectors must follow the law and respect your rights while trying to collect a debt.
