In Virginia, there is a limit to the amount of punitive damages a person can receive in a defamation suit. According to the Virginia Supreme Court, punitive damages in a defamation suit are limited to the amount of actual damages suffered by the defendant. In other words, a plaintiff cannot receive more than the amount they suffered as a result of the defamation.
