What is a reasonable accommodation?
A reasonable accommodation is a change to the environment, job duties, practices, or policies that allows a qualified individual with a disability to participate or benefit from a business’s services or activities. For example, in Georgia an employer may need to provide an employee who is deaf with a sign-language interpreter so they can effectively communicate with their co-workers. Reasonable accommodations also include changes to the physical environment, such as a wheelchair ramp for an employee who uses a wheelchair, or providing assistive technology to an employee who is blind. In Georgia, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to employers with 15 or more employees. The ADA also requires employers to make reasonable accommodations to help disabled individuals perform necessary job functions. If an employer is unable to provide a reasonable accommodation that does not cause an undue hardship, they may be in violation of the law.
