How does disability law protect people with disabilities in public places?

Disability law in Utah works to protect people with disabilities in public places. It requires buildings, businesses, and other public places to provide access and accommodations for people with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is the main law that governs such protections. It requires that public places provide similar access and accommodations for disabled people as they do for non-disabled people. The ADA also requires that all public services, from public transportation to educational institutions, be readily accessible and usable by disabled people. This includes making accommodations for mobility devices, providing assistive technology, and having auxiliary aids, such as visual cues or sign language interpreters, available. In addition, businesses and entities must provide physical accessibility such as ramps,Braille signage, elevators, and wide aisles where appropriate. Businesses must also provide reasonable accommodations in regards to communication and customer service, such as providing alternate services. The Utah Disability Law Center is also available to help people with disabilities receive access and accommodations in public places. They provide information about rights under the ADA, as well as advice on how to advocate for oneself and to seek legal help. All of these protections guarantee people with disabilities the same access and accommodations that non-disabled people are entitled to.
