What is a section 504 plan?
A Section 504 Plan is a document written by the school district to ensure that a student with a disability is provided with the proper accommodations and supports to get the most out of their education. This plan is governed by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, a federal law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination in education and other areas. A Section 504 Plan is written when the school district has determined that a student has a disability that requires them to have specialized educational accommodations and services. These accommodations and services are designed to ensure that the student with a disability has the same opportunities to participate in school activities and to be successful in their education as students without disabilities. These specialized accommodations and services may include modifications to the student’s educational program, such as modified assignments or tests, additional time for assignments or tests, specialized physical education or extracurricular activities, and access to assistive technology. A Section 504 Plan also outlines procedures for determining the student’s progress and monitoring the effectiveness of the accommodations and services provided. It is important to note that a Section 504 Plan is a legally binding document. The school district must abide by the plan and the student must be able to access it if needed. It is important for students and their family members to be aware of their rights under this law and what accommodations and services they are able to receive.
