What is an accommodation request?

An accommodation request is a document that a person or organization requests in order to obtain a modification or adjustment to a service, policy, or environment. This type of document is often used within the context of disability law in order to give people with disabilities access to the same opportunities as everyone else. In Florida, an accommodation request may be made to a school, employer, public facility, or business to adjust or modify a policy or environment in order to make it accessible to people with disabilities. Accommodation requests may include modifying existing furniture to make it accessible, providing auxiliary aids or services, changing policies to ensure equal access, or other modifications. It is important to note that accommodations should be reasonable and appropriate to meet the needs of the individual making the request. Generally, the disability must be verified by a medical professional and the accommodation must be requested in writing. If an accommodation request is denied, it may be appealed through the appropriate legal process.
