What is an accommodation request?
An accommodation request is a request for a special action or service to help a person with a disability. This request is usually made when an individual needs help to properly take part in an activity or program because of their disability. In Georgia, the law recognizes that people with disabilities have the right to ask for and receive reasonable accommodations from employers, public bodies, and businesses that serve the public. Accommodations can include special equipment, changes to the physical environment, adjustments to policies or procedures, or changes to how a job or task is performed. Accommodations can also include changes that help people access information or services. Each accommodation request is considered on a case-by-case basis and must be reasonable. Some examples of possible accommodations in Georgia may include sign language interpreters or other auxiliary aids for people with hearing impairments, accessible parking spots for those with mobility impairments, or the use of adaptive technology such as audio books or text-to-speech software for someone with a learning disability. Accommodation requests should be made in writing, and can be addressed to employers, public bodies, and businesses that serve the public.
