What is the process of requesting an accommodation at work?

If you are an employee with a disability in North Carolina and require an accommodation at work, the process of requesting an accommodation is relatively simple. First, you must inform your employer of your disability and need for an accommodation. This can be done verbally, or you may also submit a written request. Once your employer is aware of your need for an accommodation, they must provide you with an ‘interactive process’. This means that you and your employer must have a dialogue about the kind of accommodation you need and how it can be provided. Your employer must work with you to find an accommodation that works for both of you. During the interactive process, you may be asked to provide additional information about your disability and how it affects your ability to perform the job duties. Your employer may also ask you to provide suggestions on how to provide a reasonable accommodation. Once the interactive process is complete and your employer has provided an accommodation, they must monitor it to ensure that it is working. You may request additional accommodations if needed. Your employer must also make changes to the accommodation if your disability changes or your job duties change. It is important to remember that under North Carolina’s disability law, you and your employer have a responsibility to work together to ensure that you can perform your job duties to the best of your ability.
