What is an individualized education plan (IEP)?

An individualized education plan (IEP) is a written document that is developed for students with disabilities under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, (IDEA). It is designed to meet the individual needs of each student and help them make meaningful progress in school. An IEP is created by a team of people that includes the student, the student’s parents, teachers, school administrators, and other service providers such as special education teachers, counselors, and therapists. The IEP outlines the student’s educational goals and objectives and the services that will be provided to help the student meet those goals. It also outlines accommodations and modifications the student may need to help them succeed in the classroom. In Maine, the IEP is an important part of the services and accommodations provided for students with disabilities. The IEP is used to ensure that all students with disabilities receive the appropriate special education services and accommodations needed in order to access and benefit from the academic program. The IEP is also used to ensure that students have access to the same educational opportunities as their peers without disabilities.
