What is a child custody evaluation?
A child custody evaluation is a process that is used by the courts in South Carolina to determine the best interests of the child and the best custody arrangement for their future. This process is generally used when parents are unable to agree on a custody arrangement and the court needs to make a decision about the child’s future. The evaluation process typically involves both parents meeting with a court-appointed individual who is responsible for conducting an in-depth examination into the living and family situation of both parents. This individual will explore each parent’s lifestyle, home environment, familial relationships, capacity for parenting, and the emotional and physical well-being of the child. In some cases, the evaluator may also examine records such as school, medical, and financial records. After the evaluator has collected all the necessary data, they will then compile a report for the court which will provide a recommended custody arrangement for the child. From there it is up to the court to make a final decision about the best arrangement for the child and the parents.
