What is a child support modification?

Child support modification is a legal process used to alter a child support order. In Arizona, a child support order is a court order that sets out how much a parent must pay the other parent for the financial support of a child. This order is based on laws that consider the income, expenses, and financial resources of both parents. A child support modification changes the amount of money one parent must pay for the financial support of the child. This new amount may be more or less than the original order. A parent can ask for a child support modification if there is a significant change in the incomes, expenses, or financial resources of either parent. The court will review the request and decide whether or not to modify the order. In Arizona, both parents are responsible for the financial support of the child and the court will consider the best interest of the child when making a decision. The court may also consider other factors such as cost of living or daycare expenses when making a decision. One of the parties must file a motion in court asking to modify the child support order. The court will review the motion and decide whether or not to modify the support. The court may also hold a hearing and ask the parties questions about their current financial situation. After a review, the court will enter an amended order that sets out the new amount of child support to be paid.
