What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse, also known as domestic violence, is a pattern of behavior used by one person in a relationship to gain power and control over another. It can occur in any kind of relationship, whether between a married couple, siblings, roommates, or members of a dating relationship. It is a very serious problem and is illegal in Pennsylvania. According to Pennsylvania law, domestic abuse is defined as an act that causes bodily injury, puts another person in fear of imminent bodily injury, or puts another person in fear of serious emotional injury. Examples of abuse include physical violence, such as hitting, punching, choking, or restraining; sexual violence; psychological abuse, such as emotional or mental manipulation and emotional blackmail; and economic abuse, such as controlling access to finances or making decisions that limit a person’s ability to support themselves. It is important to note that domestic abuse does not always manifest itself in physical violence. Psychological abuse, such as controlling, criticizing, isolating, or threatening behavior can be just as damaging. Additionally, the Pennsylvania Protection from Abuse Act recognizes that victims of domestic abuse can include children as well as adults, and states that domestic abuse also includes stalking. Domestic abuse is a serious problem, and victims should take steps to protect themselves and seek help if they are in an abusive situation.
