What is an Advanced Medical Directive?

An Advanced Medical Directive is a legal document that gives instructions to your health care provider in Nevada about the type of medical care you would like to receive in the event that you are unable to express your wishes due to a disability or illness. It can also provide instructions about who should make decisions for you regarding health care if you are unable to make them yourself. In Nevada, Advanced Medical Directives are also known as “living wills.” Advanced Medical Directives allow you to outline your wishes if you become seriously ill or incapacitated, and can list specific medical treatments that you would or would not like to receive. For instance, you can indicate whether you wish to receive life-sustaining treatments such as feeding tubes or ventilators that could prolong life, or you can withhold certain treatments in extreme circumstances. Advanced Medical Directives can also appoint someone to make decisions for you if you are unable to, such as a family member, friend, or legal representative. This is known as a Health Care Power of Attorney. This person will be responsible for honoring your wishes outlined in the Advanced Medical Directive and any other instructions you have provided. Advanced Medical Directives are a crucial part of disability planning law in Nevada, as they allow individuals to choose and control their care and to make sure that their wishes are respected if they become unable to make decisions for themselves.
