What is a disability waiver?

A disability waiver is a document created by the state of California that allows certain individuals with disabilities to receive certain services and supports while protecting them from the responsibility of cost. This waiver is designed to help people with disabilities to live as independently as possible in their own homes and communities. A disability waiver is an important step in the disability planning law for people with disabilities to obtain the services and supports they need. The waiver process allows eligible individuals to receive services and supports and to choose from more flexible options. Services available through the waiver include but are not limited to: assistive technology, personal care and support, medical services, therapeutic and skilled nursing services, day programs, and therapeutic recreational services. The Disability Waiver Program also works to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity for employment and transportation services. This allows those with disabilities to lead more self-sufficient lives. In California, an application must be filled out and submitted to the local county office in order to determine eligibility. Further individualized assessments and documentation must also be completed before the waiver is approved. Once approved, the waiver will determine the services and supports an individual will be able to receive.
