What is a functional capacity evaluation (FCE)?
A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is an evaluation conducted by a physical or occupational therapist to assess an individual’s ability to perform certain activities or tasks. FCEs are used in California disability law to determine an individual’s capacity for work and ability to do various physical activities. It is used to help decide whether a person is eligible to receive disability benefits. An FCE is typically administered in a one to three day session at a clinic or doctor’s office, and includes a variety of tests and assessments. The therapist will evaluate the individual’s strength, range of motion, ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and other activities. The therapist may also ask the individual to demonstrate certain everyday activities, such as walking, climbing stairs, and getting up from a seated position. At the end of the evaluation, the therapist will analyze the results, and provide a report outlining the individual’s capabilities. This report will provide valuable information to the doctor and disability lawyer or representative to help determine whether an individual is eligible to receive disability benefits. An FCE is an important part of the disability planning process in California.
