What is a Vocational Rehabilitation Plan?

A Vocational Rehabilitation Plan (VRP) is a plan created by the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) to help individuals with disabilities achieve economic self-sufficiency. The plan outlines services and supports needed for the individual to prepare for, obtain, and maintain employment. The purpose of a VRP is to provide guidance to disabled individuals so that they can obtain the necessary skills and knowledge to become employed. VRPs are created by the DOR only after they have assessed the individuals’ skills and abilities and have determined the services necessary to help them reach their employment goals. A DOR counselor works collaboratively with the individual and develops a VRP outlining the services to be provided, such as vocational training and rehabilitation services. The VRP also includes a timeline for when the services will be provided. VRPs can be modified when needed. In order for the plan to remain effective, individuals are expected to actively participate in its implementation and keep progress updated. The plan is regularly reviewed for progress and may be adjusted based on the individual’s needs or circumstances. Ultimately, VRPs help disabled individuals gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to become employed and self-sufficient.
