What are reasonable accommodations for a disability?

Reasonable accommodations are modifications or adjustments to a job, workplace, or learning environment that allow individuals with disabilities to have an equal opportunity to access, participate in, and benefit from their vocational or educational setting. Reasonable accommodations are based on an individual’s specific disability and needs. In California, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) outlines what qualifies as a reasonable accommodation. Generally, reasonable accommodations may include: • An adjustment to working hours • Access to specialized equipment • A change in the physical environment • Permission to bring a service animal to work • Allowing a telecommuting arrangement • Providing additional training • Allowing for additional breaks during the work day The California Disability Planning Law requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities unless the accommodation would result in an undue hardship for the employer. Employers must also engage in an interactive process with the individual with a disability to discuss possible accommodations and to identify the best option that meets the individual’s needs. Additionally, employers are required to document all reasonable accommodations they provide to employees with disabilities.
