What other benefits might I be eligible for if I have a disability?

In California, individuals with disabilities may be eligible for a variety of benefits. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal program that provides financial assistance to individuals who have a disability that prevents them from working. Medicaid and Medicare are government-funded healthcare programs for those with low incomes or certain disabilities. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides financial assistance to those with limited income and resources, who are over the age of 65, or who are blind or disabled. The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) provides services and supports to adults and children with developmental disabilities. The California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) helps individuals with disabilities achieve employment, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. The Ticket to Work Program provides job training and placement services to Social Security recipients who have disabilities. Other benefits that may be available include a Homeowner’s Tax Exclusion, which provides a tax credit to disabled Californians who own their own homes; a Disability Access Grant, which helps to make homes and businesses accessible to individuals with disabilities; and the Supplemental Needs Trust, which helps to protect the assets of individuals with disabilities. In addition, some states have independent living centers that provide services to individuals with disabilities, including job training, education, and other resources. These centers also provide help to individuals so they can live independently. Finally, many organizations, faith-based organizations, and government programs offer a range of services to individuals with disabilities.
