What kind of assistance is available for disabled veterans?
In Georgia, disabled veterans can receive a variety of forms of assistance from the local government. Through the Department of Veterans Affairs, disabled veterans may apply for a disability pension, which can provide a monthly income supplement to offset the costs of a disability. Veterans may also be able to receive vocational rehabilitation services such as job training and placement, educational assistance, and counseling services. Additionally, the Georgia Department of Labor offers a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP), which assists disabled veterans in finding and maintaining employment. The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) also offers several programs designed to help veterans with disabilities. These programs include the Medicaid Waiver for Disabled Veterans, which helps cover the cost of medical care and home health services; the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides benefits for food; and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Homeownership Program, which provides assistance to qualifying disabled veterans for the purchase of a home. Additionally, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) offers several programs specifically designed to assist veterans with disabilities. This includes the Services for Veterans with Disabilities Program, which provides support services and assistance with applying for federal disability benefits; the State Veterans Nursing Home Program, which offers residential care to veterans with chronic illnesses and disabilities; and the Georgia Wounded Heroes Program, which provides resources, benefits, and counseling to veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
