What rights do I have under the ADA?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) grants individuals with disabilities protections under the law. In North Carolina, it prohibits discrimination based on disability in employment, public accommodations, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications. Under the ADA, individuals with disabilities have the right to access employment opportunities, public services, and places of public accommodation. This means employers must make reasonable accommodations, or modifications to the workplace, so that employees with physical or mental disabilities can access and perform the job. This includes providing additional training or assistance to improve performance. Individuals with disabilities also have the right to access public services, such as schools, hospitals, and libraries. Public transportation must provide services for those with disabilities, and must install new technology, like lifts, ramps, and accessible parking spaces. In public accommodations, discrimination based on disability is prohibited. This means that places like stores, restaurants, and movie theaters must accommodate those with physical or mental disabilities. This could include providing accessible seating, wheelchair access, and braille options. Additionally, public and private entities must provide communication access services to ensure individuals with hearing, speech, or vision disabilities have the same access to information as those without disabilities. The ADA is an important law that grants individuals with disabilities the right to access employment, public services, and places of public accommodation. It helps ensure these individuals can participate in everyday activities without facing discrimination.
