What is the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that provides job-protected leave to eligible employees for certain family and medical reasons. This law protects the rights of employees in Pennsylvania and other states. FMLA entitles eligible employees in Pennsylvania to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period for certain family and medical reasons such as a serious health condition, a birth or adoption of a child, or to care for a family member. During this leave, employees have the right to continue to receive health insurance coverage and their job is protected. Additionally, the employee has the right to return to their job or an equivalent job with the same pay, benefits and terms of their employment. FMLA also provides certain rights to individuals with disabilities. For example, if an employee has a disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities, they may be able to take FMLA leave for treatment or care of their disability. Additionally, employers must make reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities, such as providing flexible scheduling. Overall, FMLA provides important job security, health insurance coverage, and family and medical accommodations for covered employees in Pennsylvania and other states. It is important for employers and employees alike to understand and comply with their rights and responsibilities under this law.
