What is a disability review?
A disability review is a process used by the state of North Carolina to assess an individual’s need for assistance with disability-related expenses. This process helps to determine the level of care and services an individual requires for their disability, and to determine if they are eligible for any assistance. The North Carolina Division of Medical Assistance (DMA) is responsible for reviewing disability claims for individuals age 65 and older. The DMA reviews the individual’s medical records, including diagnoses, treatments, and other relevant medical information. The review also includes a review of the individual’s employment history and other resources that may provide an income. Medical demands such as activities of daily living (ADLs) and medications are also considered in the review. The review is conducted with the assistance of a doctor or medical professional, who takes into account the individual’s physical, mental, and emotional health, functional limitations, and level of disability. The review culminates in a written report that outlines the individual’s disability status and their eligibility for services and assistance. The disability review is an important part of the disability planning process in North Carolina, as it helps individuals in need gain access to services and support that can help them live more independently. It is a necessary step in the process to ensure that an individual’s disability is accurately documented and taken into consideration in any decisions that are made regarding their care.
