What is the Social Security Blue Book?
The Social Security Blue Book is a resource used to evaluate disabilities in people applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In Rhode Island, applicants and their medical professionals can use the Blue Book to determine if their disability meets the eligibility standards set by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The Blue Book provides a list of impairments in fourteen categories that are considered medically severe enough to interfere with one’s ability to work. The impairments are classified according to their severity and how long they are expected to last. To qualify for SSDI, applicants must have a disability that is included in the Blue Book or be determined by the SSA to be medically equal to an impairment listed in the Blue Book. In Rhode Island, SSI disability eligibility is based on having a lower financial status in addition to being disabled. Those with disabilities must be unable to engage in any “substantial gainful activity”, meaning they are not able to perform work that pays more than a certain dollar amount for a specific period of time. Medical evidence must be provided to support the idea that the applicant is unable to work given their disability. The Social Security Blue Book can act as a useful resource for individuals applying for disability benefits in Rhode Island, as it provides detailed information on the criteria required to qualify for the different types of disability insurance.
