What is a DUI/DWI?

A DUI/DWI stands for Driving Under the Influence/Driving While Intoxicated. It is the act of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In the state of Minnesota, it is illegal to drive with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level of .08 or higher. This applies to those over 21 years old and younger than 21 years old. Those under 21 years old can be arrested for having a BAC level of .04 or higher. A DUI/DWI conviction can have serious repercussions including loss of driving privileges, fines, jail time, and other penalties or restrictions. In Minnesota, some of the punishments for a DUI/DWI conviction include suspension or revocation of your driver’s license for 30 days or more, fines of up to $1,000, and jail time of 90 days or more. The judge may also require the offender to complete an alcohol/drug abuse assessment or attend an alcohol/drug awareness class. A DUI/DWI conviction can also increase car insurance premiums and affect your employment and educational opportunities. Therefore, it is important to stay sober while driving and to only use a designated driver if you plan to consume alcohol.
