Can I drive to work after a DUI conviction?
In Minnesota, the answer to your question is generally no. After a DUI conviction, a person may not legally drive until they receive a valid driver’s license from the Department of Public Safety. Furthermore, even if they do receive their license back, they may have to install an ignition interlock device (IID) in their vehicles, and will need to comply with any other conditions specified by the court. In order to receive their license back after a DUI conviction, a person must complete all required DUI classes and pay all associated fines and costs. They must also go through a required evaluation process and provide proof of financial responsibility (i.e. proof of insurance) in order to be legally allowed to drive again. Furthermore, if an IID is ordered, the ignition interlock device must be installed in all vehicles owned or leased by the offender before they can legally operate them. Therefore, even if a person is able to get their license back after a DUI conviction, they may still be legally prohibited from driving to work if an IID is required in their vehicles. It is also important to note that if any of the conditions imposed by the court are violated, a person’s license can be revoked and they may be subject to additional legal penalties. Therefore, it is important that anyone convicted of a DUI understands their rights and responsibilities when it comes to driving in Minnesota.
