What penalties can I receive if convicted of a DUI?

In California, a conviction for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) can have serious consequences. A person guilty of DUI can face fines, jail time, suspension of their driver license, and increased insurance rates. The fines for a first-time DUI conviction range from $390 to $1,000, in addition to $125 in court costs. On top of these fines, a defendant can be ordered to pay restitution to a victim or attend a DUI education program. A first-time DUI conviction also carries jail time, typically four days to six months. However, the court may allow a defendant to serve their sentence in an alternative program, such as electronic monitoring. A conviction of DUI can also result in the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license. In California, the suspension period is usually six to ten months, followed by a probationary period and required completion of DUI programs. Finally, a DUI conviction can lead to increased insurance rates. Insurance companies may raise rates for at least three years following a DUI conviction. In short, a DUI conviction can have significant financial and legal consequences. It is important for everyone to know the risks associated with drinking and driving.
