What is an ignition interlock device?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a device that measures the breath alcohol concentration (BAC) of a driver. It is installed in the vehicle of a driver who has been convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol. In Virginia, anyone convicted of a DUI is required to install an IID in their vehicle and maintain it for a certain period of time. When attempting to start the vehicle, the driver must blow into the device and the results are used to determine if the driver is under the influence of alcohol. If the BAC is higher than a pre-set level, the vehicle will not start. In addition, the IID requires the driver to periodically blow into the device while operating the vehicle.
