How long will my driver's license be suspended after a DUI conviction?

In California, a DUI conviction can result in the suspension of your driver’s license. The length of the suspension will depend on the circumstances of the offense as well as the severity of the consequences. For a first DUI offense, the suspension can range from four months to a year, depending on the blood alcohol content (BAC) of the individual at the time of arrest. If the BAC was .08% or higher, the license suspension will last for four months; if the BAC was .20% or higher, the license suspension will last for a year. In both cases, you may be able to get a restricted license to drive to and from work, school, and court-ordered programs such as DUI classes. If it is a second DUI offense, the license suspension will be extended to two years. Additionally, if you have been convicted of a DUI three or more times, your driver’s license will be suspended for three years or longer. In some cases, the DMV may also require you to install an ignition interlock device on your car, which is a device that prevents you from starting the car if you have been drinking. You will be responsible for all costs associated with the installation and regular maintenance of the device. Your license suspension may also be extended if you are arrested for driving under the influence while your license is already suspended due to a previous DUI conviction. The length of this suspension will depend on the length of your previous suspension. No matter the circumstances, it’s important to take DUI convictions seriously. Taking steps to ensure your license is not suspended is the best way to avoid the lengthy license suspension associated with a DUI conviction.
