What is an SR-22 insurance form?
An SR-22 insurance form is an official document that proves that you have the minimum amount of auto insurance required by the state of Virginia. The form is typically provided by your insurance company and is filed with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. The SR-22 is usually required by the DMV after a person has been convicted of a DUI violation or other serious traffic violation such as driving while suspended, uninsured, or without a valid license. The SR-22 form certifies that the driver has a policy that meets the state’s minimum financial responsibility insurance requirements. In addition to proving that minimum coverage has been obtained, the SR-22 form also serves as a warning to the driver that they must maintain the coverage for a certain amount of time. Generally, the driver must maintain the insurance coverage for three years in order to be in compliance with the law. If the driver fails to maintain the required coverage, the policy can be cancelled and the DMV can suspend the driver’s license. It’s important to note that an SR-22 isn’t insurance itself - it’s just a document that proves you have the required coverage. Having an SR-22 doesn’t guarantee you any auto insurance discounts.
